Peace From Africa: The Mozambique Story

In 1975, after winning a lengthy struggle for independence from Portugal, Mozambique fell into a bloody 16-year civil war in which a million people lost their lives and 4.5 million were made refugees. Archbishop Jaime Pedro Gonçalves, one of the mediators who brokered peace in Mozambique, and Andrea Bartoli, professor of conflict studies at George Mason University, talk about the difficult path to peace in Mozambique, a peace that has endured for the past 15 years. Bartoli is a member of the Catholic Church’s Sant’Egidio movement, which played a significant role as a mediator in Mozambique’s conflict.
