DESCRIPTION
Earth’s climate is quickly changing, and with this reality we must change our practices to mitigate the environmental consequences. In this special presentation Constance Bernard, the Sector Director for South Asia Sustainable Development (SASSD) introduced the distinguished professor and environmental economist Mohan Munasinghe to an audience at the World Bank’s Washington offices on May 24th, 2007.
Vice Chair for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and Chairman of the Munasinghe Institute for Development, Professor Munasinghe presented key findings from the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report relating to climate change science, impacts, adaptations and mitigations. He opened by telling the audience that tracing the links between environment and development is crucial to making development more sustainable. Using a framework he developed called ‘Sustainomics’ Munasinghe explained its purpose and function, which is based on a matrix design that can predict the affects of climate change on agriculture, hydrology, forests and other features He discussed how he uses Sustainomics to predict the consequences of climate change across South Asia, and he presented his findings and recommendations for government, industry and local populations.
In the question and answer session, the audience asked Munasinghe about why gaps persist between government investment in clean energy versus research that suggests different approaches, the relevance of cost-benefit analysis to Munasinghe’s work, and further tools we could use to communicate the urgency of climate change in order to compel progressive action from decision makers.
